Fish Preservation Society

Tonbridge & District Angling & Fish Preservation Society came into to being 1875.  The first committee was held on Thursday 28th January 1875 following an inaugural meeting at Rose and Crown Hotel.  Headquarters were at The Bull Hotel, In Tonbridge High Street and this was to remain the Headquarters until demolition in 1961.  The new permanent headquarters being Tonbridge Football Club, Darenth Avenue.   It was formed in 1875 By a small band of local gentlemen, who enjoyed their Angling by rod and line and were deeply concerned by the large quantities of fish being removed by ’Netting’, Presumably for sale and human consumption.  Although our title did not change to a Preservation Society until some years later, these gentlemen were preservationists in the  true sense of the word. We are surely indebted to them for their foresight and initiative in laying the foundation stones of what is one of the finest angling associations in the county of Kent indeed in the whole country.  The society has grown over the years controlling the fishing on fourteen miles of river and nine lakes serving more than 2000 members.  We would like to think that our forebears would be proud of our achievements today, In the fields of preservation, conservation and administration.
